The Temple of Aphaia - Argo Saronic islands touristic guide - Saronic

The Temple of Aphaia

Located in Agia Marina, in an area full of pine trees.

The temple is dated around 500-490 BC. It is the second one, as the earlier Doric dating to 570-560 BC was destroyed by fire in 510 BC.

The Temple of Aphaea was well known since antiquity for the gables, which adorned both narrow sides of the temple. The sculptures were colored and were made of Parian marble, with themes taken from the Trojan War. The east pediment showed the Hercules campaign against King Laomedon and the western showed the campaign of the Greeks led by Agamemnon against Priam's Troy. The preserved statues are in the sacred precinct. Around the precinct they opened a big porch. There have been discovered buildings.
